Mostly from materials preserved by Phyllis Harmon;
compilation and notes by John S. Allen
From June 1940 through January, 1956, the League of American Wheelmen Bulletin was published as a mailing, and also in (at least sometimes) abridged form as an insert in the bicycle trade magazine American Bicyclist and Motorcyclist. A number of 1945 and 1946 issues of the Bulletin were also published in the Bicycling magazine of that time, the official magazine of the Amateur Bicycle League of America, the racing organization.
The Bulletins posted here are from a previous era of the League, which dissolved and later reorganized. They are password-protected only against editing and are available for review. They are reproduced here as PDF files assembled from copies made using a digital camera. I apologize for the uneven lighting; when I figure out how to use the gradient function in my graphics software, I will correct that to the degree possible.
Many thanks to Phyllis Harmon for preserving a nearly complete collection of LAW Bulletins from the 1939-1955 era, and making them available. Missing issues are indicated in the descriptions below. Bicycle historian David Herlihy has indicated that Washington University in St. Louis has a complete collection of American Bicyclist and Motorcyclist; other major libraries may as well.. I thank Harriet Fell for providing copies of that magazine and of Bicycling from the collection of the late Sheldon Brown.
LAW Bulletin for August, 1936 when there was no League activity! -- published in American Bicyclist and Motorcyclist magazine (5.2 MB)
LAW Bulletin June-December 1940 (12 MB)
LAW Bulletin 1942, July issue missing (20 MB)
Includes material left out of one issue, and a century-run tally sheet, both mimeographed.
LAW Bulletin 1945, missing August and maybe part of September (30 MB)
Includes mimeographed notice of the new Bicycling Magazine. Includes January-June issues prepared by American Bicyclist and Motorcyclist; May-December from Bicycling Magazine. The order of pages is intentionally changed to place the LAW title page first in the stapled-together excerpts from the July and later issues of Bicycling, and to include LAW-related pages from elsewhere in the magazine. There is only one page from September, inserted in the October pages -- maybe this was the only September page or maybe I missed a couple. August is missing.
